Disposal of Christmas tree

I am trying to arrange disposal of a now dead Christmas tree. I do not see why the rubbish collectors can not take this as it is. I rang the council and they said to DRIVE it to the rubbish down in Vauxhall. This would entail unnecessary pollution and also waste of water and chemicals when I have to wash my car afterwards. Alternatively they suggested I pay £30 for large collection. This seems unfair as if I had disposed of it nearer to Christmas this would have been free, but it was still alive then. Third option was to cut it up and put in plastic bags. Surely this is a waste of plastic bags and environmentally unfriendly. I look forward to your comments. Thanks
