WCC is aware that Dorset Square has become a hotspot of very high levels of traffic, congestion, noise and potential nuisance, as well as concern over polluting emissions, particularly from long distance coaches, taxis and private taxi companies.
The ongoing air pollution is impacting on our health. Residents report experiencing unexplained wheezing sounds when breathing, tightness or dull chest pains, and having started to suffer from chronic coughs. People who live and work in this area report suffering from headaches and fatigue, other locals are experiencing their existing asthma conditions and eczema being aggravated. The coach station / stop is exclusively used by long distance coaches 24/7, and occasionally mini-buses. The coach numbers are 440 – 450 – A1 – A6 – A20 – A21 – Panther Travel –747. These coaches all stop, passengers board, luggage is loaded and wait for latecomers, at all hours of the day. All coaches idle during the waiting, boarding, loading process. Engines run and automated tannoy messages play at all hours of the day and night, making it impossible to have undisturbed sleep. Air pollutant emissions from transport are a main contributor to air quality problems in Europe. Emissions of particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) are regulated in the EU. https://ec.europa.eu/ environment/ air/ sources/ road.htm The ongoing air pollution is impacting our health.
